Horticultural market / Growers

Horticultural professionals and growers work hard every day in order to attain a standard of excellence and to provide high quality plant material to their customers. As a professional, you need to control several factors to meet these standards, to satisfy your customer needs and differentiate yourself from competitors.

Plant diseases caused by plant pathogens are one of the most important threats for growers as they can considerably impact crop yield, quality and profitability.

Agdia’s commitment to horticultural industry is well known. Thanks to its tight links with the horticultural industry and with the scientific community, Agdia has always been one of the world’s reference centers for plant pathogen detection. Every year, new tests are developed to keep pace with the onset of new pathogens and to help the horticultural industry to produce healthy and high quality plants.

Whether you would like to routinely test your mother stock (vegetatively propagated stock and tissue culture) or control any suspicious plants or new stock to prevent the infection or manage a disease crisis, we can provide you with the adequate test format. Some of our tests as Flashkits® (ImmunoStrip®) can conveniently detect the presence of the pathogen in minutes. Flashkits® are the perfect tool for a rapid control of your greenhouses to be sure to provide high quality products to your customers.

Others test methods based on ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay) can help you to routinely test for a wide range of pathogens, allowing you to build from your mother stock healthy young plants and cuttings.

Common plant pathogens

Different symptoms can be observed as:

Odontoglossum ringspot tobamovirus, ringspot on Cattleya sp. Leaf. Dr. R. McMillan, Homestead Florida

Odontoglossum ringspot tobamovirus, ringspot on Cattleya sp. Leaf. Dr. R. McMillan, Homestead Florida

  • · Lesions that may be chlorotic (yellow) or necrotic (brown);
  • · Line patterns: a series of chlorotic line or patterns;
  • · Mottle : a diffuse pattern of various shades of green;
  • · Mosaic: a definite pattern of light green/dark green areas.
  • · Ringspots: concerntric ring pattern that may be chlorotic or necrotic
  • · Blight: a rapid sequence of complete chlorosis, necrosis and death of the plant.
  • · Wilting: the plant lose its rigidity when bacteria or fungi clog the vascular tissues

Here below some examples of common plant pathogens that can cause these kinds of symptoms on plants:

Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV), Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV), Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV), Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) , Clavibacter spp Xanthomonas spp Phytophthora spp

The above listed pathogens infect hundreds of ornamental and vegetable species.

Certain pathogens are specific for a given crop. Here below are some examples:

  • · Orchids : Cymbidium Mosaic Virus (CymMV) and Odontoglossum Ringspot Virus (ORSV),
    · Hosta : Hosta Virus X (HVX),· Pepper: Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV).

In Addition to Testing

Testing is only one facet of plant pathogen prevention. Testing could result in the early detection of pathogens within your greenhouse, thus protecting other plants from infection, but to ensure a clean greenhouse, you should also:

  • • Check the health of incoming plants.
  • • Monitor disease as part of a scouting program.
  • • Protect healthy plants from infection.
  • • Assure plant health quality before plants are shipped.

Do not hesitate to contact us; we will help you to choose the suitable tests for your plants and needs
